When Day Equals Night - September Equinox

Writer's picture: Hugh F MccloyHugh F Mccloy

Equinox comes from the Latin words aequi, which means equal, and nox, which means night. On the day of the equinox, the sun’s rays are most direct over the equator. No matter the location around the globe, the sun will rise exactly due east and set exactly due west.

Many neolithic sites in Ireland were built to mark the movement of the sun and the moon, on Tuesday 21st Sept 2020 at 13:30 will officially mark the equinox however you may want to visit sites at sunrise to best see why these sites were built in the style the were.

Places to visit in Mid Ulster:

Beaghmore Stone Circles
